Wedding Vow Renewal Anzac Park Bandstand Centenary Townsville

Townsville is planning the north’s biggest renewal of wedding vows to celebrate the centenary of one of the city’s most loved but understated icons, the Anzac Park Bandstand.

The Townsville City Council has put the call out to the hundreds of couples married in Anzac Park or any of the city’s parks over the years to take part in the ceremony during a big day of celebrations on Sunday, September 29.

Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said Anzac Park continued to be one of the most popular sites for outdoor weddings in the city. “The bandstand is an important piece of Townsville’s history and heritage and it’s important to mark the 100 year milestone with a community celebration,” Cr Hill said. “The bandstand has featured in many hundreds of weddings over the years and getting couples back to renew their vows as part of the big day is a terrific way to help celebrate the centenary."

“We are putting the call out for couples who were married in Anzac Park to register their interest for the occasion. “It’s a chance for couples to be part of an historic occasion and at the same time reaffirm their commitment to each other.”

Well known Magnetic Island-based Townsville civil celebrant Crusty Heron, who has married 50 couples at the bandstand, will officiate at the mass renewal of vows.

Brass and Brides: 100th Anniversary Anzac Park Bandstand is a free event and will include live ‘brass band’ entertainment, stall displays, historic re-enactments, croquet games, sausage sizzle, photographic displays of the bandstand’s past, and a kids’ zone. Keep the kids occupied while you celebrate your marriage.

The number of weddings in the city’s high profile public areas has grown steadily since civil celebrants were first introduced in the early 1970s.

Since 2008, 232 ceremonies have been held in Anzac Park alone.

Couples can register for Brass and Brides by email: rsvp@townsville.qld.gov.au or call:  07 4727 9013
